We shot Erin+Matt’s Maternity Session back in January, it was chilly but we still had lots of fun.  Brendan arrived at the beginning of April and we were able to squeeze in a session when he was a month old.  Ideally its best to shoot newborn sessions during the first 2 weeks because they are super sleepy then.  We made it work & it was no big deal!  Brendan didn’t really want to sleep for his photographs.  So instead of lots of sleepy baby photos we were able to get some adorable shots of Brendan with Mom+Dad :)  Which is making me think I want to incorporate more lifestyle images for newborn sessions.  It’s easy to get caught up in all the adorable little props and set ups for newborns, but there is something so nice about a simple black and white photo of a newborn.  So sweet & cute.

Enjoy your preview Erin+Matt, the rest of your images will be posted online as soon as I finish them up!  I know you’ve been patiently waiting to see them.

Evelyn just turned 1!  Her mom Michelle (who is one half of The Pink Pinwheel, making yummy cakes & cupcakes) went all out with her Circus themed birthday.  It was a fun filled afternoon for the kids, Prue came with me and had a blast playing with the kids. Let’s start with the cutie pie birthday girl.  She looked adorable in her tutu and was all smiles the entire party.

Michelle had so many treats for the kids.  Prue came home with a bag full of candy & fun toys.

Michelle made the cakes & cupcakes.  The cake look like a circus big top and then she made popcorn cupcakes & the clown cake pops.  She even made cupcakes that looked like snow cones.  The kids (and most of the adults) enjoyed trying all the treats.

The face painter was a surprise treat!  She did an amazing job painting all the kids faces.  They were all so excited to have their faces painted & they all looked so cute.  It’s made me consider having a face painter for Prue’s birthday party in September.

Along with the face painting Michelle had a bounce house that the kids loved (makes me also want to get one for Prue’s next birthday!) and lots of other fun games.  Evie wanted to go swimming in the little pool instead of matching the ducks.  I think there were several kids who wanted to go for a swim in the pool.  Prue definitely tried to take a dip.

My sister Mel came with me to the party to help keep an eye on Prue.  She had a blast, running all over the place and playing with all the kids.  I was lucky enough that she stopped for a minute to pose for a photo with me.

The party was a huge success and everyone had so much fun.  We can’t wait for Evie’s 2nd birthday party to see what Michelle comes up with!

We are shooting Melanie & Dan’s wedding next April.  Melanie is a nurse & Dan does web design (he is working on their wedding website & I can’t wait to see it!).  They are a fun couple and we love how they were down for whatever we wanted to do during their session.  This shoot was part of the Lowell Shoot Out group that I organize.  It’s still fairly new, but the idea is to set up shoots in the Greater Lowell area for local photographers to come, get to know each other better & possibly teach each other something.  When I put out requests for couples for our May Lowell Shoot Out group Melanie sent me a message volunteering for it.

They did a great job at the shoot out & we are super excited to shoot their wedding at the Danversport Yacht club.

Thanks to Kathie of We Do Weddings for connecting us with Melanie and Dan :)

Enjoy!

Tips for the Bride | Ordering your wedding dress

I think “Tips for the Bride” might be a new feature (we’ll see, I don’t have any plan to do it weekly but who knows).  I work a few days a week, part time at Chantilly Place.   I’ve been doing it for a little over a month and a half.  I use to work retail when I was in college and right out of college.  I was looking for something part time and working at a bridal salon seemed like a perfect fit.  Colleen at Chantilly Place was looking for someone to help out a few days a week (prom season makes the bridal salon extra busy right now).

What I have realized over the last couple months of working at Chantilly Place is not everyone knows how far in advance you should order your bridal gown (as well as bridesmaid dresses & mother of the bride/groom). The idea for doing this post came from that.

Bridal Gown: 4-6 months before your wedding date.  Occasionally we can get them faster but you might be limited on designers if its shorter then 4 months.  Start looking far enough is advance so you can make sure you don’t have to rush.  Some brides select a gown on their first trip to the store others need more time.  You don’t want to have to rush so start looking around 8 months and you’ll have plenty of time to browse.  We can definitely get gowns in on a shorter time-line then 4 months so don’t think you can’t come in and get a dress if your wedding isn’t that far away.  In an ideal situation plan for 4-6 months to order your dress & have it sent to us in time for alterations to be completed.

Bridesmaids: 12 weeks (3 months)  When you are selecting a dress for a large number of maids make sure you have plenty of time to make the decision.  If you want to have time for all of your bridesmaids to try dresses on and have input on the final choice you’ll need take that into consideration too.  You can often do a rush order on dresses, but that is going to cost more.  Just like with bridal gowns we can often get dresses in a shorter time frame, but you might be more limited on what you can get.  Some companies offer a limited number of dresses at a quicker shipping & each company has a different shipping time.  So don’t be afraid to come in even if the wedding is less then 12 weeks away, just realize you might be limited.

Mother of the Bride/Groom: 12 weeks (3 months)  I see lot’s of MOB & MOG come in and have no idea when they should start looking.  If you are looking for something on the more casual side I am sure you could find something at a department store at the mall.  If you are looking for something a little dressier and you want to have the options of a variety of sizes & colors come to Chantilly Place.  We have a variety of dresses for all types of Mom’s, I think most think of MOB/MOG dresses have to look matronly, that isn’t the case at all.  We have a large variety of styles from modern & dare I say a little sexy to more traditional.  The other perk of coming to a bridal salon to purchase your dress is we can help you customize the dress if it isn’t exactly what you are looking for.

Custom: If you don’t find exactly what you are looking for Chantilly Place also does custom gowns.  We have a variety of sample customs in the store to give you an idea of styles.  You can have us remake one of the sample custom gowns or it can be changed and tweaked so it’s even more custom.  When you order a custom gown the dress is made to your measurements so you don’t need any additional alterations.  Time frame varies on custom dresses.  Get in touch with Colleen as soon as you think you want to have a custom gown made for you.

Because I can’t write a blog post without a few photos, here are a few images I’ve taken of Chantilly Place.  Also head on over to facebook and like Chantilly Place!

Each week I do a search of the Wedding category on Etsy to see what new items have been added.  Sometimes I spend lots of time searching through the pages and other times I find something interesting really quickly.  This week it was a matter of minutes.  I was browsing Weddings & then clicked on the sub category of Cake Toppers when I came across the sugar wafer butterflies of Sugar Robot.  What I love so much about this find is you don’t have to use these only for a wedding.  These could be used for a child’s birthday party that is butterfly themed or even a bridal shower.

Here is what Lisa, the owner of Sugar Robot says in her etsy profile:

Behind every sugar robot there’s a sweet chick.
That would be me, Lisa. I live and create out of Ventura, Ca. I’m an aspiring Chemist who has a passion for baked goods. I took my first decorating class over 8 years ago and have been hooked ever since.
“Making the world fun…..one cupcake at a time”

Edible Butterflies - Assorted Pink and Purple - set of 30

I love this assortment of purples & pinks.  So pretty.  Edible Garden Party set of 24 White

I think the white could be really pretty on a cream colored cake, something very monochromatic or even another color, I’m not really loving it with the red, but I love the simplified shapes of these butterflies.

Edible Butterflies - Small Assorted Pink and PurpleEdible Butterflies - Assorted Blue set of 30

The butterflies are gorgeous and not terribly expensive.  They are a lot of bang for the buck for sure!!  Head on over to Sugar Robot and check out these lovely butterflies as well as the other sugar items she has in her shop (leaves, bugs, flowers)

It was a blast shooting Evelyn’s Cake Smash session a little over a week ago.  She was so excited to dig into the cake and just kept giggling while I was shooting.  I couldn’t help buy laugh with her.  She got right into it and didn’t want to stop.  Her first birthday party is this coming Saturday and I can’t wait to go shoot it (and be a guest!  Prue is invited to Evie’s party too and from what Michelle has told me so far about it, I know Prue is going to have so much fun!).   This little nugget is so adorable and I am so happy that I have been able to capture her at this age.  I look forward to many more sessions in the future!

If you are interested in doing a Cake Smash session for your little one we can do it at the end of your regular portrait session or I am now offering special Cake Smash mini sessions (as well as other Children Mini Sessions).  In collaboration with Michelle and Cassie of The Pink Pinwheel (Evelyn’s mom is Michelle) we are offering the 30 minute session and a smash cake. All you need to do is show up with your little nugget and be prepared for the clean up :)  We’ll take care of the rest.

Details:

The session is a half hour on location in the Lowell area, it can be at a local park or at your home if you live in the area.

The session fee is $75 if you want to include a smash cake from The Pink Pinwheel it’s $85.  I will pick the cake up from Michelle for you and bring it to the session.

email us at amanda@mrdrewphotography.com to schedule your session.  Weekends are filling up but we can still squeeze in week day afternoon sessions.
